The Millennium Commission


Established in 1993, the Millennium Commission invested over £2 billion of National Lottery money in buildings, environmental projects, celebrations and individual community schemes across the UK to mark the third millennium.

In a bid to improve the Commission’s overall IT infrastructure and strategy, it sought an outsourced managed support service provider which would not only understand its technical requirements, but also its unique business needs and objectives.

The Challenge

The Commission was wound up by Parliament in 2001, however it still had a number of projects to complete. Because of the unique nature of the organisation, it required a cost-effective supplier that could work in close partnership with the Commission, providing a managed IT support solution that could readily adapt to the downsizing of the operation.

Having previously suffered from poor service in this area, the Commission was committed to working with a quality supplier who would deliver a strong, secure and effective service as well as providing the necessary upgrades to the current IT infrastructure.

Solutions Delivered

Chosen due to its understanding of both the business and technical needs of the Commission, ISG technology implemented a domain upgrade from Windows NT to Windows XP, and rolled out Office XP desktop applications across the organisation. In addition, regular disaster recovery tests were implemented to ensure that any errors in procedures were identified, noted and subsequently eliminated.

Providing a complete managed support service for the Commission’s server infrastructure for over two years, the organisation could rest assured that the correct level of technical skills, personal involvement and shared responsibility was invested in the service. The support provided reduced the amount of time, effort and money needed to deal with server failures, resulting in significant cost-savings to the organisation.

With all phases of the project delivered on time and in budget, feedback from the Commission was positive. Overall performance and user satisfaction levels increased considerably and the resulting IT infrastructure was robust, secure and efficient.
