Kent Fire & Rescue Service
Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS) protects 1.6 million people in the Kent and Medway region and was recognised as one of the top fire authorities in the UK, according to a recent Audit Commission report.
Operating from 66 fire stations, 4 fire safety offices and with a fleet of more than 120 fire engines and other operational vehicles, the organisation covers more than 400km (250 miles) of motorway and major trunk roads, as well as supporting its regional air and mountain ambulance services along 225km (139 miles) of coastline.
The Challenge
In its work to save lives and reduce risks, KFRS has pledged a commitment to continuously innovate and improve. One way of achieving this goal is by using information and technology to best effect in bringing its vital services to the public.
To this end, KFRS has drawn up a comprehensive Information Management Strategy, working to an ambitious three-year plan. An important part of this initiative is to enable its emergency crews to receive critical data and rescue information much more quickly.
Mobile data terminals would provide the technology to help the Authority realise this ambition, but first and foremost KFRS needed to find a technology partner to perform the deployment. As well as showing expert technical prowess, the appointed team had to demonstrate proven project management skills to ensure minimal impact on time crucial operations - as even the shortest of interruptions could prove hugely disruptive and in the worst case scenario, fatal.
Solutions Delivered
Following an initial meeting, ISG technology was selected as KFRS’s preferred technology service provider.
Impressed by the team’s expert insight and flexible approach, the Brigade’s Mobile Data Project Manager chose to work with ISG and its partner, Wireless Logic, having failed to find any other service provider offering ISG’s superlative levels of support. As a network infrastructure, IT solutions and support specialist, ISG is in a unique position to offer a true end-to-end service.
The installed mobile data terminals help to improve access to and the process of data, and in doing so increase the safety of the Fire Service’s employees, as well as the public.
Fundamental in keeping the project on track and without detrimentally impacting on the service, ISG facilitated regular scoping and progress meetings with consultants and key partners to evaluate the effectiveness of their continued collaborative working.
Since starting the project, ISG has been successful in refining the solution and shortening the supply chain, resulting in a more responsive service which ultimately enables engines to reach emergencies more quickly.
Importantly, ISG has also been careful to use industry standard equipment, ensuring costs are kept well within the set budget, as well as enabling long-term future proofing.
